Status of handling of the Explosion & Fire and Operating situation at the Himeji Plant

NIPPON SHOKUBAI CO., LTD [Tokyo Stock Exchange – TOKSE:4114.T] (“NIPPON SHOKUBAI”) is deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from the explosion and fire at the Himeji Plant on September 29 and extends its sincere condolences to family members. In addition, NIPPON SHOKUBAI extends its sincere apologies to the individuals who were injured by this accident and to the enormous problems this incident caused for the neighborhood of the plant and to other people associated with this incident.

NIPPON SHOKUBAI announces status of handling of the accident, operating situation after the accident and prospect of re-start of the operations as follows:

1. Status of handling of the accident and operating situation
On November 1, NIPPON SHOKUBAI received a lift of restrictions for a steam boiler, some combustion facilities for liquid waste, and some related facilities in the Plant from the authority, to maintain public safety at the plant site.
Operations of all the production facilities in the Plant are suspended at this moment.

2. Prospect of re-start of the operations and financial impact
No prospect of re-start of the operations at this moment
NIPPON SHOKUBAI will make best effort to supply products to customers although all the production facilities in the Plant are suspended.
Concretely, NIPPON SHOKUBAI is considering manufacturing of products, of which raw materials are available, at NIPPON SHOKUBAI’s other locations and/or outside toll manufacturers. As basic conditions can be changed in the future, possibilities of realization is unknown.
At this moment, it is very difficult to estimate the financial impact of the accident to this fiscal year, and influence to customers.
