Promoting Decarbonization Using Low-Carbon Ammonia Derived from Used Plastics -Jointly Certified with Resonac Corporation under METI’s “Support focusing on the price gap” Program-
NIPPON SHOKUBAI CO., LTD. (President and CEO: Kazuhiro Noda, hereafter “Nippon Shokubai”) jointly applied with Resonac Corporation (President and CEO: Hidehito Takahashi, hereafter “Resonac”) and was recognized under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s “Support focusing on the price gap”* program on September 30, 2025, as part of its efforts to help realize a decarbonized society.
Under this initiative, Resonac plans to further reduce the carbon footprint of ammonia production at its Kawasaki Plant (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture) by exclusively using hydrogen derived from used plastics. Currently, the plant manufactures ammonia using a mix of hydrogen obtained through gasification and chemical recycling of used plastics, and hydrogen obtained by reforming city gas. With new facilities scheduled to begin operation in April 2030, Resonac aims to transition to ammonia production using only hydrogen derived from used plastics. The development and implementation of new processes building on existing operations will enable further decarbonization of ammonia production. Nippon Shokubai participated in the joint application as a user of the ammonia to be supplied from Resonac’s new facility. By utilizing this low-carbon ammonia, Nippon Shokubai aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the entire lifecycle of its products and continue to deliver high-performance products that also offer significant environmental value.
Nippon Shokubai has long been committed to reducing GHG emissions through the promotion of energy conservation, process improvement, and the use of green energy. In 2024, Nippon Shokubai obtained ISCC PLUS certification for ethanolamine produced from ammonia. Nippon Shokubai will promote the further use of recycled raw materials, work to minimize environmental impact across the supply chain, and contribute to enhancing customer value and realizing a circular economy.
