Surfactants are used in cosmetics for purposes such as emulsification, solubilization, and dispersion. A surfactant is a substance that possesses both a hydrophilic group, which is water-attracting, and a hydrophobic (lipophilic) group, which is oil-attracting, within its molecular structure. These properties enable surfactants to exhibit significant surface activity at liquid interfaces.
In addition to emulsification, solubilization, penetration, wetting, dispersion, and cleansing, surfactants also serve various other functions such as moisturizing, antibacterial action, lubrication, antistatic effects, softening and defoaming.
