Oxazoline Group-Containing Water-Soluble Polymer: EPOCROS™ WS Series Oxazoline group-containing water-soluble polymer

Basic Information

EPOCROSTM is a reactive polymer with oxazoline groups on the side chain and is used as a cross-linking agent for water-based resins. Among the water-based polymers developed to address environmental issues and the increasing use of water-based products due to VOC regulations and desolventing, the EPOCROSTM WS series is a “water-soluble type” with the following structure.

Features and Properties

  • High Reactivity with Carboxyl Groups in Waterborne Resin
  • Higher reactivity than water-based crosslinkers such as epoxy, melamine, blocked isocyanate
  • VOC free (EPOCROS™ WS-300 and EPOCROS™ WS-700)
  • High crosslinking density with a small amount added
  • Long Pot Life, One-Component Type (when mixed with waterborne resin containing neutralized carboxyl groups)
  • Improves water resistance, solvent resistance, heat resistance, and the strength of films, etc.
  • Adhesion-imparting possible to PET, OPP, PVC, etc.
  • Fast drying
  • Low toxicity (Ames Test: Negative, Primary Skin Irritation Test: No irritation)

Reactivity with Functional Groups of EPOCROS™ WS

The oxazoline groups of EPOCROS WS react most effectively with the carboxyl groups of water-based resins. They also react with aromatic thiol and phenol groups, but do not react with alcoholic hydroxyl groups.

Reaction Mechanism of EPOCROS™ WS (Oxazoline Groups) and Carboxy Groups

After the reaction between oxazoline groups and carboxy groups, stable amide ester bonds are formed, and no by-products are generated. The reaction between oxazoline groups and carboxy groups proceeds slowly at room temperature, but becomes significantly faster at temperatures above 100 ℃.

Substrate Adhesion via Oxazoline Groups

By incorporating EPOCROS WS, adhesion is improved through crosslinking between the oxazoline groups and the carboxyl groups of the water-based resins, and through interaction between the oxazoline groups and the substrate’s surface functional groups.

It can be used to improve adhesion to metal and plastic substrates, as a primer for optical PET films, and as a treatment for PET fibers.

New Crosslinking Technology

A new technology of mixing and heating emulsions containing COOH groups with a specific neutralization ratio improves the reactivity of the functional groups and lowers the curing temperature from the conventional 100°C to 80°C.
