Establishment of a Green Innovation Department to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050

NIPPON SHOKUBAI CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Osaka, Japan, President: Yujiro Goto, hereinafter “Nippon Shokubai”) is strengthening our efforts in Production Division, Business Division and Innovation & Business Development Division in line with the company-wide policy to achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, one of the major issues of sustainable management. We will establish a new Green Innovation Department within the Innovation & Business Development Division on August 1, 2021, to strengthen our business creation strategies and functions. By consolidating the efforts of each organization of the Innovation & Business Development Division and clarifying responsibilities, we will further strengthen the research and development and promotion of commercialization functions to achieve a sound material-cycle and carbon-neutral society.

[Overview of Green Innovation Department]
The Green Innovation Department has been newly established as part of the Innovation & Business Development Division by integrating sustainable projects and research planning and development organizations related to energy and resource use.
Responsibilities
– Development of manufacturing methods from bio-based raw materials of our core products (acrylic acid, ethylene oxide)
– Development of CO2 capture and conversion technology
– Development of new technologies for ammonia manufacturing and utilization
– Development of other technologies related to carbon neutrality
– Examination of green innovation strategies

Nippon Shokubai is proceeding with “Strategic Transformation for Environmental Initiatives” toward the 2030 long-term vision of “Techno Amenity for the Future” established in April 2021. We have been working toward realization of a sound material-cycle and carbon-neutral society, including the development of recycling technology for superabsorbent polymers used in disposal diapers, the commercialization of the lithium ion battery electrolyte IONEL; (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide, LiFSI), and the development of separators for alkaline water electrolysis for green hydrogen production. We also set up a sustainable project in the Innovation & Business Development Division of the R&D Organization in April 2020, for promoting R&D from a medium to long-term perspective, including the development of sustainable production of our core products: acrylic acid, superabsorbent polymers, and ethylene oxide as well as promoting research and development of CO2 conversion and ammonia utilization, which are expected to be used worldwide.
With the newly established Green Innovation Department, we will work toward the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050 by consolidating in-house technologies and knowledge as well as formulating strategies with a view to collaborating with other companies.

The following are comments from Yasutaka Sumida, Director of Innovation & Business Development Division, Member of the board, Managing executive officer.
“Our environment is changing both drastically and rapidly, and Nippon Shokubai is accelerating its efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality. This is the basis of research and development activities, with an eye on future trends in the environment and energy fields. By strengthening appropriate external cooperation, we will work on the development of technology that will have a large ripple effect and contribute to the solution of important social issues.”
